Greetings from the School of Engineering at the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, MERCED. We are innovative, transformative and on the rise. In the 16 years since the university's first classes were held, the School has established a solid foundation for sustained excellence. In our short history, UC Merced has risen in the rankings as part of the Top 100 overall and Top 40 of public universities by U.S. News & World Report. We also are first among public universities in outperforming expected graduation rates and fifth among all universities in supporting social mobility. As a highly diverse school and institution, the School of Engineering is always looking for new ways to engage students and broaden their paths to career and research opportunities. Fall semester 2021 marked the debut of a new Civil Engineering major that emphasizes sustainable systems and infrastructure. The School will also introduce a streamlined Bioengineering major that offers career pathways in biotechnology and in biomedical imaging and bioinstrumentation. We also are proud of our widely recognized faculty such as Assistant Professors Arvind Gopinath and Marie-Odile Fortier, who each received received a 2021 National Science Foundation CAREER to support their research. Gopinath is studying how biological materials respond to features of their environments and cause infection. Fortier is researching climate change impacts of solar and ocean renewable energy. UC Merced is truly building the future in the heart of California, and the School of Engineering is proud to be a major part of the university's success.
