Physical wellness is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, UC Merced Recreation & Athletics supports the physical wellbeing for our students by offering state-of-the-art facilities, diverse fitness programs, and engaging athletic opportunities, UC Merced actively supports its students in achieving their fitness goals and maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
Well-Equipped Facilities
The Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation and Wellness Center serves as the hub for physical activities on campus, offering a wide array of amenities. The center features a spacious fitness center equipped with modern exercise machines, weightlifting equipment, and designated areas for cardio workouts. Additionally, it houses a multipurpose court for basketball and volleyball. The Student Activities and Athletics Center (SAAC) offers additional weight room space, group fitness and cycling studio. Students have access to state-of-the-art outdoor facilities such as the Aquatics Center featuring a state of the art 50 meter pool, Recreation Field and outdoor tennis and basketball courts.
Fitness Programs
Recognizing that a one-size-fits-all approach to fitness is ineffective, UC Merced Recreation & Athletics provides a diverse range of fitness programs to cater to the individual needs and interests of its students. These programs encompass group fitness classes, personal training sessions, and wellness workshops. Whether students prefer yoga, group cycling, or strength training, there are numerous options available to suit different fitness levels and preferences. There are also women only hours in the weight room weekly in the Student Activities and Athletics Center (SAAC). These programs not only enhance physical fitness but also foster a sense of community and camaraderie among students who share similar fitness goals.
The Outdoor Experience Program (OEP)
The Outdoor Experience Program (OEP) supports both the physical and mental well being of UC Merced students through outdoor activities ranging from day hikes in Yosemite National Park, multi day backcountry camping trips, to sea kayaking. In addition to the trip opportunities, students can rent outdoor equipment for their own outdoor excursions. The Outdoor Center is in the Student Activities and Athletics Center.
Intercollegiate and Intramural Sports
UC Merced places great emphasis on fostering a culture of inclusivity and providing athletic opportunities for students of all skill levels. The university's intercollegiate sports teams participate in the California Pacific Conference, allowing students to represent their university and compete against other institutions. Show your Bobcat Pride and come out and support fellow Bobcats competing in basketball, soccer, volleyball, cross country, track, and water polo! Additionally, students can join intramural leagues and recreational sports, clubs providing a platform for friendly competition and promoting active participation in sports irrespective of skill level.

The 2024-25 UC Merced Athletics season is gearing up! Game Day is always an exciting time, so plan to attend a game or two and show your Bobcat pride! UC Merced has 12 intercollegiate teams participating in the NAIA – men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, soccer, track, volleyball and water polo. Check the Game Day schedule for the full lineup of games this season. Admission to games is free for students – just show your CatCard. Join us to cheer on our teams with Rufus!
