About
materials and biomaterials science and engineering M.S. | PH.D.
The Materials and Biomaterials Science and Engineering (MBSE) Graduate Group offers a multidisciplinary research and training program for master-level and doctoral students who want to be at the forefront of the modern revolutions in materials science technology
The program applies the tools of nanotechnology to model, create and characterize transformative nano materials with exciting new properties through the implementation of nano-scale and/or bio-inspired devices for applications in human health, green energy, artificial intelligence and environmental sensing. MBSE students will be exposed to, and benefit from, a thoroughly multidisciplinary training that synergistically incorporates elements from engineering, physics, chemistry and biology.
research areas
MATERIALS FOR SUSTAINABILITY
The Materials for Sustainability emphasis includes materials for energy harvesting, conversion, and storage, as well as sensing, monitoring and treatment of air and water.
MATERIALS FOR BIOMEDICINE
The Biomedicine emphasis includes biomimicry, biomaterials and tissue engineering, drug delivery, microfabrication, and bioelectronics for sensing and monitoring.
MATERIALS AND INTERFACES FOR TAILORED FUNCTIONALITIES
The Materials and Interfaces for Tailored Functionalities emphasis includes creating new organic and inorganic building blocks and corresponding material platforms for novel thermal, mechanical, optical, electronic, plasmonic and quantum behaviors in bulk or at interfaces to enable fundamental studies and technological advancements.
materials and biomaterials science and engineering at uc merced
The Materials and Biomaterials Science and Engineering (MBSE) Graduate Group offers a multidisciplinary research and training program for doctoral (prioritized) and master-level students at the forefront of the modern revolutions in materials science technology.
Our students also enjoy a wide choice of experiences from a rich toolset that includes:
- Molecular and cell biology, biophysics; advanced spectroscopy and imaging; protein engineering; microfluidics;
- Materials synthesis and manipulation, electrochemical, electronic and optical characterization, structural analysis and imaging, cutting edge nano-manufacturing;
- Computational modeling and simulation.
The Fall 2024 priority application deadline for the MBSE program is December 15, 2023; applications submitted by this date will receive priority review. The general deadline is January 15, 2024 (any late applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis if space is available).

FUNDING SUPPORT
Each doctoral student receives a stipend of $24,000 (includes tuition, fees and health insurance) per year. Students in good standing are eligible for year-round financial support, including payment of fees and tuition. Students are typically supported by teaching and research assistantships, which can be supplemented by fellowships, awards and other forms of financial assistance.
