About
economics PH.D.
The STEM-designated Ph.D. program in Economics at UC Merced prepares students to answer real-world questions, using frontier economic methods and data sources. We emphasize rigorous quantitative training focused in applied microeconomics areas, leveraging our faculty expertise in public and labor economics, international trade, political economy and culture, the economics of innovation, and experimental economics.
Our young, research-active faculty works closely with graduate students on questions relevant to, for example, migration, education, policing, and tax policies and prepares students for careers both in academia and in industry and government.

ECONOMICS AT UC MERCED
UC Merced is located in a region of California, the Central Valley, that is culturally rich, economically important, and within easy reach of several other UC campuses as well as the Sierras. As its newest campus, we provide students access to a vast array of resources associated with the University of California, the world's premier public university system. We admit only a handful of carefully selected students each year to guarantee full funding to all admitted students while cultivating substantial interaction between faculty and students. Our young program provides a diverse and supportive research environment for the next wave of economists.
Not accepting applications for Fall 2025.

FUNDING SUPPORT
All doctoral students in good standing are eligible for year-round financial support, including payment of fees and tuition. Teaching assistantships normally provide initial funding that can be supplemented by research assistantships, fellowships or other forms of financial assistance including travel awards. The Economics Ph.D. program is proud to announce that the Charles Perry Ellis Fellowship, which covers both semesters and some Summer funds, will be used as a recruitment fellowship this coming year, which funds one student without the need to serve as a teaching assistant.
The low cost of living in Merced means that funding stretches further than at many other campuses. We have also offered annual research grants to our students, which has assisted with their ability to acquire skills, conduct research and present work at professional conferences.
