CHEMISTRY & biochemistry at uc merced
Research in Chemistry and Biochemistry at UC Merced seeks to provide insight into fundamental chemical problems, develop novel applications based on these insights, and interface at the cutting edge of biology, physics, mathematics, and engineering. Our research programs range from studying how HIV targets cells and the chemical origins of life to visualizing chemical reactions and improving solar cell efficiencies. Our faculty members are committed to excellence in research and instruction, and have won a variety of awards at regional, national and international levels. Our faculty and students participate in four new federally funded scientific research centers: the Center for Cellular and Biomolecular Machines (NSF); the Center for Chemical Computation and Theory; the Consortium for High Energy Density Science (DOE), and the Merced nAnomaterials Center for Energy and Sensing (MACES funded by NASA). Our collaborative environment, coupled with strong research ties both inside UC Merced and beyond, provides students with opportunities to become excellent scientists while answering challenging, topical questions.
AFFILIATED RESEARCH CENTERS AND INSTITUTES
research areas
» Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics: Challenges posed by biological problems are driving the development of new analytical tools and prompting advances in the physical and chemical sciences to help understand the molecular basis of life. Our research covers a wide range of topics, from fundamental questions about the structure and function of biomolecules to understanding the molecular mechanisms of diseases. » Computational/Theoretical Chemistry: Computational methods are valuable tools for predicting a wide range of chemical properties, including thermochemistry, reaction mechanisms, potential energy surfaces, and spectroscopy. Our faculty develop new theoretical methods and use high performance computing to investigate important problems in molecular, biological, and materials chemistry. » Organic and Organometallic Chemistry: The Organic and Organometallic division at UC Merced has a strong background in physical organic chemistry, materials chemistry, and synthetic organometallic chemistry and catalysis that empowers the discovery and understanding of chemical reactions and the synthesis of new functional molecules combining organic and inorganic techniques. » Materials/Physical Chemistry: Physical chemistry is concerned with the fundamental principles of chemistry and serves as the underpinning for all other branches of chemical sciences. Materials chemistry designs and fabricates novel materials with interesting physical, chemical, and functional properties. The development of these materials is critical for advancing current and future technology within the fields of biomedicine, catalysis, energy, storage, and separations.
