About
BIOENGINEERING M.S. | PH.D.
Bioengineering is a dynamic field dedicated to developing innovative technologies for understanding, manipulating, and designing biological systems at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. The Bioengineering Graduate Group at UC Merced provides a robust research and training program for master’s and doctoral students eager to tackle a wide range of challenges, from fundamental biological processes to biotechnological, clinical, and healthcare applications. Our core focus is on employing novel methods and inventive approaches to advance both scientific knowledge and engineering practices.
research areas
MOLECULAR AND CELL BIOPHYSICS
Structural, quantitative and functional characterization of biomolecules, including proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids, and their complex interactions, in vitro and in their cellular and organismal context to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms of life.
SYNTHETIC MOLECULAR AND CELL BIOLOGY
Design and engineering of custom biomolecules, assemblies, cellular structures, and biological devices with applications in biomedicine.
BIOLOGICAL IMAGING AND SPECTROSCOPY
Advanced technologies to obtain, analyze and display images and/or structural and mechanistic information of biological systems at the molecular, cellular, tissue, and organismal levels.
BIOLOGICAL MODELING AND SIMULATION
Mathematical models, computational methods and simulations to capture, understand and learn how to design complex biological phenomena.
AFFILIATED RESEARCH CENTERS AND INSTITUTES
bioengineering at uc merced
The Bioengineering faculty at UC Merced provides research opportunities across a broad spectrum of areas, including biosensors, the engineering of biological nanomachines, gene expression control, the molecular basis of inflammation, smart drug delivery systems, mechanobiology, soft and active matter, vascular biology and angiogenesis, and advanced in vivo biomedical imaging techniques. Additionally, many faculty members are part of the NSF-CREST Center for Cellular and Biomolecular Machines and contribute to the NIH-funded G-RISE I-BioSTeP interdisciplinary training program.
