About
BIOENGINEERING M.S. | PH.D.
Bioengineering is an exciting area involved with the development of new technologies for the characterization, manipulation and design of biological systems from the molecular to the organismal levels. The Bioengineering Graduate Group at UC Merced offers a vibrant research and training program for master-level and doctoral students who want to explore cutting-edge solutions to a variety of life sciences problems ranging from fundamental biological processes to biotechnological, clinical and healthcare applications in which the overarching principle is to apply the newest methods and approaches for scientific inquiry.
research areas
MOLECULAR AND CELL BIOPHYSICS
Structural, quantitative and functional characterization of biomolecules, including proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids, and their complex interactions, in vitro and in their cellular and organismal context to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms of life.
SYNTHETIC MOLECULAR AND CELL BIOLOGY
Design and engineering of custom biomolecules, assemblies, cellular structures, and biological devices with applications in biomedicine.
BIOLOGICAL IMAGING AND SPECTROSCOPY
Advanced technologies to obtain, analyze and display images and/or structural and mechanistic information of biological systems at the molecular, cellular, tissue, and organismal levels.
BIOLOGICAL MODELING AND SIMULATION
Mathematical models, computational methods and simulations to capture, understand and learn how to design complex biological phenomena.
bioengineering at uc merced
UC Merced Bioengineering faculty offer research opportunities in many topics across these four areas, including: biosensors; engineering of biological nanomachines; control of gene expression; assembly and function of biomembranes; molecular bases of inflammation; smart drug delivery systems; drug design; polymer gels in marine chemistry and lung disease; mechano-biology; phototaxis in algae; genome editing; vascular biology and angiogenesis; cardiac electrophysiology; cardiovascular disease; novel methods for in vivo biomedical imaging; X-ray luminescence tomography. Many of the bioengineering faculty are also members of the NSF-CREST Center for Cellular and Biomolecular Machines.

FUNDING SUPPORT
Each doctoral student receives a stipend of $24,000 (includes tuition, fees and health insurance) per year. Students in good standing are eligible for year-round financial support, including payment of fees and tuition. Students are typically supported by teaching and research assistantships, which can be supplemented by fellowships, awards and other forms of financial assistance.
