Applied Mathematics at UC Merced has a strong multidisciplinary focus, leading to projects at the interface between mathematics and life sciences, physical sciences, engineering and social sciences. Training emphasizes modeling of complex systems, scientific computing, and data-enabled science, and is used to solve real-world problems.

Our research program, guided by a young and vibrant faculty, offers students a background in the fundamental tools of applied mathematics, including ordinary and partial differential equations, asymptotics and perturbation methods, numerical analysis and scientific computing.

UC Merced is one of the few institutions in the country to emphasize state-of-the-art applied mathematics. The emphasis on applied mathematics enables our program to foster the intellectual growth of individuals who are trained to use their analytical and computational skills to solve society’s most challenging problems of today and beyond.


Each doctoral student receives a stipend of $24,000 (includes tuition, fees and health insurance) per year. Students in good standing are eligible for year-round financial support, including payment of fees and tuition. Students are typically supported by teaching and research assistantships, which can be supplemented by fellowships, awards and other forms of financial assistance.
